Sara, a child with no identity

Sara lives in a tent without water or light. In winter, when temperatures drop below zero, she is cold but has no way of keeping warm.

Having returned to her homeland, recently liberated from Isis, her family has not been able to regain possession of the small flat in the centre of the village, since the documents proving their ownership were lost during the years of escape.

Sara is also without documents and has no possibility of going to school: her mother is alone in looking after her and her siblings and does not have the money to pay the bureaucratic costs nor does she know how. She spends her days in the street, together with her peers and without ever leaving her toy doll.

It is for children like Sara who have never been to school that we are active in Al Shiraq (Iraq) where, three years after the end of the war, communities are still living in extreme conditions.

Al Shiraq, in particular, is one of the most recently liberated areas from Isiswhere thousands of families who fled the violence are returning. Here, at least 50% of the school buildings have been damaged, destroyed and occupied by the fighters and are now dangerous and cannot accommodate children. There is also a lack of teachers, and the few that do exist resort to old-fashioned methods and physical punishment.

Our aim is to guarantee education for the children because without schooling they have no future but a life of exploitation, abuse and extreme poverty.

We foresee to provide them with school materials they need to study, desks, chairs and blackboards necessary for lessons and, last but not least, offer them recreational material so that they also have the opportunity to play and live their lives as children.

Join us to change the fate of the children of Al Shiraq
