Schools and the future are very important to COOPI Switzerland, which is why we decided to respond to Lebanon’s need to improve access to quality education for the most vulnerable sectors of the population.
Northern Lebanon has suffered and is still suffering from a deep crisis: the country hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees, a situation that has affected resources and the economy. But that is not all: the Covid-19 and the subsequent rise in prices have further impoverished the population, aggravating the social and financial crisis.
One of the consequences of this situation is that many Lebanese and Syrian boys and girls have dropped out of school: due to the Pandemic of the last three years, schools have been closed and now that they can reopen many young people are at risk of not returning to school, while those who have returned are living in a failing system.
Lebanese public schools have had to cope with a growing influx of children from Syrian refugee families and Lebanese families who could no longer afford the high fees of public schools.
Thanks also to our supporters, we have therefore taken steps to help children in North Lebanon through a tutoring programme for 270 children enrolled in public schools. The project also provides basic literacy courses for 480 young people excluded from the school system.
This will allow 750 Lebanese and Syrian children to study and change their history!
