More than two months have passed since the earthquake that devastated northern Syria on 6 February. The emergency in this country still remains high: after 13 years of crisis, the earthquake has worsened an already critical situation.
Many still find themselves without any shelter, having lost everything under the rubble. The risk of epidemics is very high due to the borderline hygienic conditions and the most fragile groups, women, children, the elderly and the disabled, are the ones in the greatest difficulty. Families do not know how to get food and many need psychological support because the traumas suffered in just one night have been terrible.
COOPI Suisse, through the COOPI network, still continues to deploy resources to support the Syrian population. In recent months, we have reached 14,000 people, including 4450 women, 7330 children and 900 elderly people.
Thanks also to those who supported us, we distributed 5,000 blankets and 11,344 hygiene kits. 16,000 people received food parcels and bread.
To cope with psychological difficulties, 450 children were involved in recreational and psychosocial activities, while another 2,186 people received psychological support or were referred to specialised facilities.
These seem high numbers, but in reality many more families still need our help. COOPI Suisse will continue to support another 365 families in order to give the Syrian population a future again.
