A little over a month has passed since the terrible explosion that devastated the Lebanese capital, causing almost 200 victims and 6.000 injured.
The news has recently spread that the search for the missing people would have been interrupted: thus also the hope of finding the last person alive in the rubble is discarded.
Meanwhile, concern is growing for the more than 300.000 people – including around 100.000 children – left homeless.
“Immediate measures must be taken to prevent more than half of the population from risking poverty and hunger,” warns the executive secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for West Asia.
The COOPI staff already present in the area has extensive experience in emergency situations and intervened immediatly to bring first aid to the families who lost everything.
Thanks to the support of many donors from the COOPI network, 14.033 hot meals have been prepared and distributed in the past weeks, as well as 3.600 sandwiches, 2.257 baskets with fresh foods (fruit and vegetables) and 136 baskets with dry foods (rice, lentils, pasta, oil , cans, etc.).
But support cannot stop here because the water systems in the buildings in the neighborhoods near the port are badly damaged and drinking water has become scarce.
