IRAQ: supporting the education of the most vulnerable children

Areas of intervention

Three years after the end of military operations, people in Iraq are still living in conditions of emergency.

The governorate of Salah al-Din, in the north of the country, is one of the areas with the highest number of people who have returned to their homeland after months of displacement and among them there are almost 300.000 individuals in need of basic services and humanitarian aid, including more than 80.600 children.

In this context, the number of children and adolescents who do not have access to education or do not have the materials to study, particularly those in primary school, is very high.

In addition to reconstruction efforts, there is an urgent need to restore teaching and learning services in the long term.

In Al Shirqat, where we operate, 84% of children attend school without school supplies and more than half of the teachers do not have sufficient materials to ensure quality education.

Our goal is to support access to education for the most vulnerable children between the ages of 6 and 14. We want to provide books, pens and notebooks to 945 students at the girls’ and boys’ primary school in Al-Jumailah, located in West Shirqat. Our intervention will also support the 20 teachers of the schoolwho will receive materials to carry out educational and recreational activities with the children. We also intend to provide the missing furniture in the classrooms: desks, maps, blackboards, printers, laptops, projectors and products for cleaning and disinfecting the schools in compliance with hygiene regulations to stop the spread of Covid-19.
